HumanureMap is free to use and always will be. It isn't free to make — and the biggest cost is prying public records loose from states that charge to release them. If the map has shown you something you needed to know, help keep it going.
The server. Fifty-thousand-plus sites have to load fast on a phone with one bar of signal. That's a monthly bill that comes whether or not anyone donates.
Records-request fees. The states that hide biosolids data make us file formal open-records requests to get it — and many charge for staff time and copying. A single $50 gift can cover the fee that unlocks an entire state. Your tax dollars already paid to collect this data; we shouldn't have to pay again to show it to you, but that's the deal, and we'll keep paying it.
Independence. A couple of small local ads help, but we keep them few on purpose. Donations are what let this stay a public-interest map instead of a billboard.
Not able to give? Two free ways to help just as much:
• Report a location — know of a spread site we don't have? Add it from the map.
• Spread the word — share the map with a neighbor, a county commissioner, or a reporter.
